Scholarship Stories That Moved a Room and Launched a Campaign
Duke Health was preparing to launch Made for This, the largest philanthropic campaign in its history. In fiscal year 2025 alone, Duke raised 605 million in philanthropic gifts, including 220 million for Duke Health. The campaign called for storytelling that could bring its mission and impact to life. The team needed a compelling way to show donors the real impact of scholarship support. They wanted to bring the mission of Duke Health to life through the voices of the students who would become the next generation of physicians, nurses and physical therapists.

Blueline was asked to create a series of films that could anchor a major donor event and continue serving the campaign long after.
Our Approach
Duke Health needed three authentic student stories that represented the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Physical Therapy and aligned with the new Made for This campaign identity. The project required one combined film for a three hundred person donor event and individual stories for newsletters, outreach and future communications. Each student had a unique background and little on camera experience, so creating a supportive environment was essential.

Storyfinding and Trust
Every project at Blueline begins with listening. We conducted pre interviews with each student to understand their histories, motivations and the moments that shaped their paths in health care. These conversations helped us move past surface details and uncover the emotional truth that would guide each film.

On Campus Production
We filmed on Duke’s campus across three degree programs in two schools, spending time with each student in classrooms, labs and personal spaces that reflected their day to day lives. Our team created a warm, supportive environment that helped the students relax and speak with honesty. By keeping the experience fun and human, we captured vulnerability that could not have emerged from scripted prompts.
Brand Integration
The Made for This campaign introduced a new visual identity for Duke Health. Our editors and designers built a graphics package that aligned with the brand and elevated the storytelling. The final films looked and felt like an integrated part of the campaign from the start.
A long form version tied the three stories together with a visual journey across campus, while each short film stood on its own for future use.

The Stories
Albert
Growing up on Ebeye in the Marshall Islands and later living in New Orleans, Albert saw how access to quality health care could shape the direction of a family’s life. Those early experiences fueled his determination to pursue medicine. Now an MD student at Duke, Albert carries a deep sense of purpose and gratitude. Scholarship support made his path possible and opened the door to a future where he can serve communities like the ones that shaped him.
Martin
Martin was inspired by his father, who passed away from cancer, to help others facing the same disease. He earned his first nursing degree from Duke and spent fifteen years caring for cancer patients, bringing empathy, steadiness and lived experience to every room he entered. Now pursuing his second degree, Martin is training to become a family nurse practitioner. Scholarship support has allowed him to continue the work that honors his father’s legacy and expands the impact he can have on patients and families.
Kristina
Kristina’s background as an athlete taught her discipline, resilience and a firsthand understanding of the body in motion. Her desire to work more closely with a health care team inspired her to pursue the Physician Assistant Program at Duke, the first PA program in the country. As a scholarship recipient, she is able to focus on her training, expand her capacity to serve others and step fully into a career rooted in care and collaboration.
Impact

A Moment That Landed
At the donor event, the combined film played early in the evening. When the lights came up, all three students stood and received a standing ovation. Donors sought them out throughout the night to thank them, ask questions and share their own stories. The room felt the weight and promise of their journeys.

Collaboration That Made It Possible
Blueline has partnered with Duke Health on previous storytelling projects. This long standing relationship created a strong foundation for collaboration. Erica Kitchen, Director of Stewardship, helped identify students, provided campaign insights and ensured that the films aligned with Duke’s strategic goals.
Together, we collaborated to honor the students and bring their stories forward with care.
The Blueline Difference
We believe the truth is more compelling than anything we could script. By listening first and creating space for people to be themselves, we help our collaborators share stories that move audiences. This project highlights what happens when trust, authenticity and thoughtful design come together.
Made for This was an opportunity to honor three remarkable students and support the mission of Duke Health. We are grateful to have helped bring their stories to life.
